Chapter Eleven

Bella woke to a sharp knocking on her front door. She glanced at her phone to check the time and saw she’d missed several texts from Seth. She knew who was pounding on her door bright and early on a Sunday morning.

She stumbled to the door, peeked through the peephole, then pulled the door open. “Why are you here?” She crossed her arms in front of her and couldn’t help the scowl she knew was on her face. Seth in jeans, a deep red cotton shirt with the sleeves rolled to his elbows, and scuffed leather boots was too much gorgeousness for her system to handle this early in the morning.

“If you checked your texts, you’d know.”

“I was asleep. I don’t check texts when I’m asleep.”

“Let me in, Bella.” He never used to let emotion show in his eyes, but this morning instead of flat gray, they glinted with humor, and when his gaze traveled over her, appreciation. Which made her remember that she was wearing an oversize t-shirt, which hung off one shoulder and barely covered her butt.

He held two lidded to-go cups, one dangling the tag of the tea she liked. She reached for it but he pulled it back.

“Damn it,” she muttered, giving up on any thought that she’d get him to leave. “Fine. Give me my tea and you can come in.”

He handed her the tea, and she turned around to shuffle into the kitchen. He followed, setting down his cup and snagging the bag of bagels from the counter. She watched as he got a cutting board and serrated knife from a drawer.

“Can I get you anything else, maybe your slippers or the Sunday paper?”

He shot her a grin that made her toes curl. “You know you’re kind of grumpy in the morning?” She ignored him, instead sipping from her hot tea. He placed the bagels in the toaster oven and turned to lean back against the counter.

“Your brother here?”

“No, he insisted he was well enough to go back to his place. He—”

That was as far as she got. Seth snagged her tea and set it on the counter, then grabbed her hand to tug her forward.

In less time than it took to form a coherent thought, she was leaning against six foot plus of warm male who smelled of coffee and the outdoors.

He placed his mouth on hers and she melted like warm chocolate. This was a bad idea, there were reasons they couldn’t be involved, but that didn’t stop her from slipping her hand under the collar of his shirt to feel the warm skin of his neck while opening her mouth to his kiss.

He reached under the hem of her t-shirt to run his hands down her backside, pulling her into the cradle of his legs against the heat of him. The kiss was teetering on the brink of something more when he pulled back, drawing in a deep breath as he rested his jaw against her temple to whisper in her ear, “Good morning, Bella.
